13 Nov 2007 - Abbey Hill Chess Tournament

The recent event at Abbey Hill School Technical College (Stockton-on-Tees) provided lots of players with their first ever opportunity of tournament chess.

I was able to combine several of Abbey Hill's own players with a reunion event for the SNAZ Summer School.

All of the players enjoyed the experience and everyone was able to use the experience to improve their own skills.

The tournament was run on the Swiss system and after four rounds Ashleigh Featherstone and Emma Marshall had both won all of their games.  Naturally, they were paired together in the fifth and final round.

Emma took an early advantage and looked to be on the road to victory.  However, Ashleigh fought back very well and eventually forced a draw by means of perpetual check.

Thus Emma and Ashlieigh took the medals and certificates as joint winners.

Jack Jones was third, narrowly ahead of Scott Bonas.

I hope to see all of the competitors at more chess events soon.
